Important International Student information from Marsha Gordon...

FYI for Your Advising:

International students who are here on F-1 visas or J-1 visas MUST enroll and remain enrolled for the entire semester in a minimum of 12 credit hours if they are an undergraduate student and 9 credit hours if they are a graduate student (6 if the student has a Graduate Aide position) in order to maintain their good status with the INS.

They must be enrolled in the minimum of credit hours for the full Fall and Spring semesters. They need not be enrolled in the Summer Sessions and enrolling in summer does not make up for hours not taken during the Fall or Spring sessions. If they breach this 12 credit hour rule, the student immediately falls "out of status" with the Immigration and Naturalization Services and can face stiff consequences for falling out of status.

There are a few rare exceptions to this rule, the only one of which that would not require a special, written change of status application through my office, would be a graduating senior who has less than 12 credit hours required to complete the degree. Please call me if you have questions or concerns on any situation or problem that might arise as you advise any international student during the upcoming registration times as well as the period of withdrawing from classes that has begun. If you are unsure whether a student is actually an international student, please call me anytime. Thanks for your help in getting the correct information to these students.
