Establishing Residency

To receive in-state tuition, a registered student seeking reclassification must complete an Application for Residency Reclassification.  The required proof of residency documents and application must be submitted to the Registrar for approval.  the applicant must permanently reside in Indiana for one full year prior to making application for residency.  Exceptions may exist for unemancipated students.  Applications must be filed with the Registrar no later than fifteen days after the day on which classes begin for the academic session for which classification is sought.

Procedure

  1. Pick up the Application for Residency Reclassification form in the Enrollment Services Center in Lawshe 130 or print a copy of the on-line application.

  2. Complete the application and attach proof of residency documents as listed on the guidelines sheet.

  3. Make an appointment with the Office of the Registrar at (219) 989-2239 to review your application.

  4. Provide proof of residency documents as required by Purdue University West Lafayette.

  5. Wait for a decision from the Registrar within 30 days of submitting your application with proof of residency document.  Students are required to make necessary financial arrangements with the Office of Student Accounts during the decision process or classes will be canceled for nonpayment.

Required Proof of Residency Documents

Guidelines for Emancipated Students

If you are an emancipated student (do not depend on your parents for support and are not claimed by them as a dependent on their income tax return), you should complete pages one and two of the application.  A copy of the following documentation is required:

  1. your most recent state income tax return with W2's

  2. you Indiana driver's license

  3. your Indiana car registration

  4. your voter's registration card

  5. your lease/mortgage agreement for the past/present year

  6. your most recent pay stub

  7. your military leave and earnings statement (if applicable)

  8. your most recent bank statement

  9. your permanent resident alien card (if applicable)

  10. your marriage certificate (if requested)

Guidelines for Unemancipated Students

  1. your parent/guardian's most recent federal and state income tax returns with W2's

  2. your parent/guardian's Indiana driver's license

  3. your parent/guardian's Indiana car registration

  4. your parent/guardian's lease/mortgage agreement for the past/present year

  5. your parent/guardian's voter's registration card

  6. your parent/guardian's most recent bank statement

  7. your parent/guardian's most recent pay stub

  8. your birth certificate which lists the names of your parent(s) (if requested)

A student not satisfied with the initial written determination concerning his/her residence classification may appeal the decision to the Residence Review Committee.  The written appeal, including reasons supporting the appeal, may be forwarded to:
