Career Exploration| Day on Campus| Project Excel
Educational/Cultural Field Experiences

6th through 8th Grade


Academic tutoring in a variety of subject areas is made available to all participants in conjunction with the Office of Skills Assessment during the months of October - April. We have coordinated this effort to ensure participant compliance with the state of Indiana CORE 40 and ISTEP/GQE requirements. 

 

Tutors are university students who have demonstrated knowledge of middle and junior high school subjects and have expressed a desire to work with students in this age group. The tutorial period begins in October of each year and extends through May.

Career Exploration

Career Exploration activities are planned throughout the year to encourage and reinforce the importance of implementing an early career guidance awareness program.  Participants are provided assessments that gauge personality and social interests so that they can a better understanding of themselves as it relates to occupational choice.

Day on Campus

Day on Campus is held annually during the month of May. All participants in the Initiative Component are invited and transported to Purdue University Calumet to experience campus life at a commuter college. There is always a special presentation on The 21st Century Scholars Program. This program was implemented by the State of Indiana to assist economically disadvantaged Indiana families in financing educational costs .  An awards presentation and keynote speaker culminate this annual event.

Educational/Cultural Field Experiences

Educational field experiences are planned throughout the academic school year for participants at targeted schools. These field experiences are designed to highlight an array of professions and occupations and allows the participant to network and develop professional/mentor relationships.

Project EXCEL

Project EXCEL is a three week summer enrichment program with an enrollment capacity of 45 Initiative Component participants. Those selected will participate in interactive classes in math, science, computer applications, and/or language arts; go on field trips that are both educational and fun; experience an opportunity to talk with successful persons representing many career fields; and be recognized for academic and social achievements.
